Dressed in red and white at all time, having long white beards,he carries a big bag full of gifts, only coming around once a year. I wonder what happened to his flying deer because I have never seen them in Nigeria. Some say he is a citizen of North Pole others say he is fiction.Am not opposing any of there belief oh but I just wonder how his IMAGE became so popular in our contemporary world haven been maintained and reinforced through song, radio,TV, children books and cartoons, film and other advertising agencies. How did Santa Claus become a symbol of Christmas?
Symbols are powerful tools that gives the representation of an idea, image or reality in our mind, and literature is the technique to that effect. They can be characters, letters words, images etc. A vivid look at the Eiffel Tower paints a picture of Paris, so does the Statue of Liberty; a picture of USA or the free world.Ori-Olokun connotes the Yoruba race and origin, the Cross; the picture of Judgement and starring at the Nigerian coat of arm, a picture of Authority and power pops up.
The importance of Symbols goes beyond its meaning. It drives around helping us think a particular way and feel and act a particular way when they are introduced into the Subconscious mind, just as we all with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, we are being transformed into the same image…
Little wonder the political diplomat was thought the language and literature of the Chaldeans, fed with the king’s delicacies to make him accept, think and act according to the modus operandi, modus vivendi, and pedagogies of the world system. But he understood the power of images, symbols and literature. Therefore he stuck to the more sure image of the word.
The world economy has its language, symbol and literature. That literature paints the image of scarcity, even the teachings of economics is predicted on the doctrines of scarcity. We hear of recession, inflation,National Budget which are symbols of scarcity. Scarcity is the reason why we have a CEO, a Manager, a Minister of Finance who can effectively manage scarce resources.
On this note let us look unto the reality of the truth; where there is no scarcity, lack or want. Let us demonstrate that truth this season by giving to the needy and being a blessing to our world. St. Nicholas became the symbol of Christmas by giving; now he is called Santa.
